Just because it's fun, here are the last 20 search terms that people have ended up here with. My favorite is "girls could beat them." There's also a lot of people out there curious about the Chones triplets, it seems.

Here's the Colgate release on preseason "media day" and the HC release about it.

Your official preseason PL team consists of:

POY Meade
DeBerry
Davis
Linebaugh
Blue

Why didn't I choose Winston Davis? I don't think he's a true 4 or 5 player, and I wanted to have 2 true post players on the PL team. I think Draughn was the best other option, although I will admit Davis deserves a spot if you're not following those rules.

The preseason ranking predictions were:

1. HC (98)
2. LC (76)
3. CU (74)
4. AU (70)
5. LU (45)
6. BU (42)
7. NAVY (25)
8. ARMY (17)

Mine would look a little different:

1. HC
2. AU
3. CU
4. LC
5. BC
6. LU
7. NAVY
...and we kick Army out of the league, replacing them with the more athletically formidable
8. St. Mary's School for the Blind

I think LC and LU are overrated. No, I don't have anything against Pennsylvania.

I didn't get a chance to listen to the broadcast, but I'll probably check out the archive of it. There's a good report of the HC section by the always informative HC alum NTK here.

Things are heating up, I'll be sure to keep updating regularly, as news comes in.

Navy: Now that we don't suck at football, we're working on basketball

Fun and true fact of the day: Don DeVoe once got in a shoving match with this man. Can anyone tell me the hows and whys? You'll get your name in lights if you do.

Navy unveils new basktball looks

CRAIG ANDERSON, Staff Writer

On one side of Halsey Field House, a new-look Navy men's basketball team spent the past week trying to impress veteran coach Don DeVoe.

Practicing just a few feet away was the veteran women's squad and its new leader Tom Marryott.

It promises to be a year of transition for both Navy hoop teams, which wrapped up a week full of practices on Friday.

After coach Joe Sanchez abruptly resigned in the offseason, interim coach Marryott inherited a talent base expected to challenge for a Patriot League title and NCAA tournament berth that comes with it. A productive six-player senior class is down to its last shot at going somewhere in March.

The Midshipmen are a hungry bunch after going 16-11 during the regular season last year, only to fall in the league tournament first round for the fourth straight time.

"He's adding fuel to the fire," said two-time all-Patriot League guard Courtney Davidson, the team's captain in 2003-04 of Maryott. "Physically we come off the court exhausted, but mentally we're fired up and ready to go. At the end of a practice we wonder how we got so much done in just two hours, 15 minutes."

With the graduation of a large senior class and a couple unexpected departures, the men's team is a little less settled. Adding to that, senior point guard/team captain Jason Fernandez pulled his hamstring on the first day of workouts and was a spectator until late last week.

Without Fernandez around, junior Taj Matthews became the team's primary ballhandler during early drills. Returning point guard Kwame Ofori has moved to a shooting guard spot to utilize his physical strength and ability to drive.

Minus even more leadership then expected with Fernandez's absence, the men spent the week going through the basics of man-to-man defense, a staple in any DeVoe-coached team. Not much went right during last season's 8-20 campaign.

In addition, new assistant coaches Dave Wojcik and Blake Flickner were added in the offseason to replace Marryott and Nathan Davis (now at Bucknell).

"Right now we're trying to get the guys to understand the physicality of Division I basketball," DeVoe said. "On nights when we're not shooting the ball well we've got to be strong enough to play aggressive, hard-nosed defense. Those principles are being put into place right now."

Sophomore forward Matt Fannin has gained more than 20 pounds since last season, and plans the use his 6-foot-7, 233-pound frame to his advantage. He's the frontcourt's top returning scorer at a scant 2.9 points per game.

Then there's 6-8 sophomore Mike Higgins, who returns from a two-year Mormon Mission that took him completely away from basketball. When he gets back into mental and physical playing shape, another weapon will be added.

"Higgins looks like he'll be able to score pretty well," Fannin said. "He looks like he can bang underneath, but still has a good shooting touch."

Earlier this month, the men's program received a verbal committment from 6-foot-4, 205-pound forward-guard Charles McKnight of Southern Pines, N.C. The 17-year-old was an All Mid-Southeastern Conference pick as a junior for a 3-20 Pincrest High team.

McKnight visited the academy the weekend of Navy's football upset of Air Force, and decided he was coming to Annapolis soon afterward.

"They put it like this," McKnight told The Pilot newspaper. "It's obviously a hard place to be, but it's a great place to be from. What it comes down to, these are the people I would like to be like in the next four or five years ...

"I got to play with the team and fit in well with the type of offense - it's real up-tempo."

Marryott said he hopes the women can become more up-tempo than last season. He hopes to take advantage of point guard Maile Shimoda's open-court abilities, along with mobile post players Bryanna Herring and Adrienne Roseti.

Besides the veterans, 6-foot freshman forward Carly Meyer is expected to make an immediate impact.

The women began with a wide-open scrimmage at a Midnight Madness session last Saturday before 400 fans and haven't slowed down since.

"It was my first chance to look at them in a five on five setting," Marryott said. "There were a lot of floorburns and a even little blood at times. They are terrific workers and a lot of fund to be around."

After a Blue-Gold scrimmage on Nov. 9, the women host M.I. Express in an exhibition game on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. The season opener is Nov. 21 at Robert Morris, with the first home game on Nov. 25 against Morgan State.

The men host Team Champion in a Nov. 16 exhibition, followed by the Nov. 21 opener at South Carolina. The first home game comes Nov. 24 versus Belmont.

Pre-season Madness Begins

Here's how I see the All-League team shaping up. Only one of these is really questionable, the others ought to be locks for what the actual team looks like. See if you can guess which one isn't the lock.

G - Meade, Holy Cross
G - Linebaugh, Colgate
G - Deberry, Lafayette
F - Draughn, American
F - Blue, Colgate

Now, if there was any sense to this, I'd be able to pick more than three guards. This league is short in every way. Trying to pick a second frontcourt player (Blue seems to be the best of the bunch easily) is tough. The two other options are probably Rob Dill of LC and Nate Lufkin of HC. I think Jernavis Draughn is better because of his ability to play the 3 and 4, as well as his strength, which neither Dill or Lufkin has really shown me they have. Both of them are taller, but I'm not sure they're stronger in the post. Draughn can take a few dribbles, drive, rebound, and play some post. Dill and Lufkin seem like they can only rebound and play the post, or simply play the under the post in Lufkin's case (he was outrebounded by PG Jave Meade last year). Also, I'm an AU fan dammit, I'm allowed to slide AU's way when things are questionable.

As is, I think the rest of these are pretty solid choices, with Rodriguez from AU not making the cut because he hasn't consistently been a scoring threat, due to playing with Patrick Doctor two years ago and getting hurt last year. All in all, it's hard to argue with the lineup here. Colgate gets two spots, but it's hard to not put Blue and Linebaugh on the list.

Now onto the preseason POY. In the coaches and SID's minds, it's probably a three-man race. Meade, Linebaugh, and Deberry. Before I tell you what I think, let's make it clear that this is the hardest award to give out. It's a toss-up regardless. And that's why it makes it easier to give it to Linebaugh.

I think this guy is great. I can't say enough about him. With most of the AU opponents, I'm busy yelling things about their sister while they play, but Linebaugh is just about sick every time I see him in action. He takes hits like no one else I've seen, and has that extra something on the court.

Two cases in point:
- The 2001 PL championship tournament. Linebaughs finger basically pops out of his hand after he gets hit, he keeps playing for a bit, comes over to the sideline to get it popped back in, and goes back out on the court and looks like Steve Nash.
- AU @ CU last year. He hits a more-than half court shot at the end of the 2nd half to win the game, and essentially give Colgate the tie for 2nd place, when they really had no business coming in anywhere above fourth.

So Linebaugh's my pick. Other people can reasonably disagree. My pick to actually be league MVP at the end of the year? #10, Andres Rodriguez. Seriously underestimated by everyone. Will play better than everyone by year's end.

But, again, I'm just an AU fan.

NEXT: Picks on teams.

PS. Congrats to HC alum Jack McKeon for defeating the powers of evil.

AU Continues Takeover of NBA

I'm curious how many players have been drafted from PL schools (not neccessarily while they were in the league). All I can name are Robinson and Foyle. Anyone know?

UAlbany assistant leaving for NBA;
Ross headed to Charlotte

Mark Singelais; Staff Writer

University at Albany assistant basketball coach Frank Ross said Wednesday he is leaving to take a job as a scout with the Charlotte Bobcats, an NBA expansion team that begins play in 2004-05.

Ross said he is starting his new job Oct. 15.

When Ross played at American University from 1983 to 1987, he played for coach Ed Tapscott, now the Bobcats' executive vice president and chief operating officer.

'I think (Charlotte) is a great opportunity,' Ross said.

Ross will handle college and international scouting.

Ross spent the past two seasons at UAlbany. He was a fifth-round draft choice of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers in 1987.

UAlbany head coach Will Brown said he would like to have a replacement for Ross by the time practice begins Oct. 18.

I'm still around/Colgate goes schollie

Sorry for the lack of updates folks, work has been nuts. But the season is within grasp, only a month until regular season action! In the meantime, here's some articles about Colgate's turn to scholarships, HC's preseason hype, and prospects for all the teams.

Enjoy!

Holy Cross places 16 in the pre-season Mid-Major Top 25. FYI, they were ranked 10 at the end of last season. I'm not sure anyone thinks they can do it again this year, but you never know in a small league like ours.

Washington Times Pre-season Assessment of AU:

AMERICAN: Jeff Jones begins his fourth season with the Eagles by rebuilding their backcourt. AU lost leading scorer Steven Miles [16.4 points a game] and point guard Glenn Stokes [15.2]. The Eagles will look to senior defensive specialist Andres Rodriguez to run the team at point guard. Highly touted freshman Linas Liekavicius, a Lithuanian who played high school ball in Charlottesville, and Virginia high school star Andre Ingram should help fill the void at guard.

Jernavis Draughn, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, will be asked to take on a leadership role and build on his 8.9 points and 4.9 rebound averages. Jones has posted two consecutive winning seasons since the Eagles joined the Patriot League, but AU [16-14 last season] is still seeking its first NCAA appearance.

Recruiting takes lots of time, effort for Marist staff

Roderick Boone

Bowen replaces Mostransky

Dan Bowen, the most valuable player of the 1999 Pepsi-Marist Classic, has joined Magarity's coaching staff and will serve as an assistant, replacing Kyle Mostransky.

Bowen, a Bucknell graduate, started his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Scranton in 2001. He assisted with the scouting of opponents and off-campus recruiting. In addition, he coordinated film exchange and oversaw the weight-training program.

At Marist, Bowen's main responsibilities will be film exchange, recruiting and planning and execution of practices.

"Obviously, we are thrilled to have him," Magarity said. "I think he is a tremendous addition to our staff. How often do you bring in a guy who was the MVP of the Pepsi-Marist Classic and he didn't even play for you? The kid is a first team All-Patriot League center for Bucknell. He is just a terrific player and a great kid, plus he has two years of (coaching) experience."

Colgate to offer limited number of sports scholarships

By JOHN KEKIS, AP Sports Writer

HAMILTON, N.Y.

Breaking from its long-standing tradition of awarding financial aid solely on need, Colgate University announced Monday that it would begin offering a limited number of athletic scholarships as part of a plan 'to enhance excellence in programs across the campus.'

The policy, approved Saturday by the school's board of trustees, will go into effective with the class entering in fall 2004.

'Our aim is to make Colgate the school of choice for students committed to making meaningful contributions both in the classroom and on the playing field,' Provost Jack Dovidio said.

The decision comes four years after the Patriot League, in which Colgate competes in 23 sports, began allowing athletic scholarships. The private liberal arts college, located about 35 miles southeast of Syracuse, has an enrollment of 2,800.

In all, 31 full scholarships worth about $37,000 each will be available for both men and women in basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and swimming and diving. Women competing in field hockey, softball and volleyball also will be eligible. No athletic scholarships will be given in football because the league does not allow it.

'We are enabling our coaches to selectively recruit that special blend of scholar-athlete - the student who is currently being wooed away by schools with equally high academic standards but with more to offer in terms of scholarship aid," Dovidio said. "This effectively levels the playing field and puts us in a position to improve both our academic and athletic profiles.

"A lot of times, we end up having to turn our backs on some kids because they're great students and great athletes but have little or no financial need," Dovidio said. "A lot of times we're losing those kids to scholarship schools."

The policy change was reached after a 13-month study by committee comprised of about 20 senior administrators and faculty.

Dovidio said the change would reduce the number of recruited athletes by about 25 percent. Roster size was not expected to decrease because walk-ons and other students who can play Division I sports but who are not recruited athletes will still be among the students attending Colgate, he said. The change also is expected to have another effect.

"Winning teams are phenomenal for school spirit. So the more winning teams we can have, the better it is for all of our students and faculty," Colgate president Rebecca Chopp said.

Chopp said the university wasn't adding any money to its scholarship pool, only rearranging it. She said a major evaluation of the new policy would be done in four years.

COLGATE GETS COMPETITIVE UPGRADE;
STARTING NEXT FALL, THE PATRIOT LEAGUE SCHOOL WILL AWARD SOME ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS.

By Matt Michael Staff writer

In the late 1980s, the Patriot League was formed on the Ivy League concept that all scholarships for athletes should be based on academics and financial need, not athletic ability.

But it didn't take long for that concept to go out the window, leaving Colgate University administrators with a difficult choice: Award athletic scholarships like most of the other Patriot League schools, or stay the course and keep the Colgate teams at a competitive disadvantage.

After 13 months of soul-searching, hand-wringing and numbers-crunching, the administrators decided to level the playing field. Colgate University, a founding member of the Patriot League, announced Monday that it's going to start awarding athletic scholarships in selected sports starting with the class that will enter school next fall. 'The (Patriot) league moved beyond us,' said former Raiders athletic director Mark Murphy, who left Colgate this past summer to become the athletic director at Northwestern. 'We believed in the original principles of the league, but nobody else did.'

Colgate, an original member of the Patriot League, will award a total of 31 scholarships per year in the following sports: men's and women's basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and swimming and diving, and women's field hockey"

Colgate to offer athletic scholarships

By CRAIG MUDER

HAMILTON - For five-plus years, Colgate men's basketball coach Emmett Davis has been able to offer recruits a chance to play Division I basketball while earning a top-notch education.

What Davis hasn't been able to offer - unlike almost all of his 327 fellow coaches - is an athletic scholarship.

On Monday, Colgate University leveled that playing field by announcing it will offer athletic scholarships in 13 varsity sports starting with incoming freshmen in 2004.

'We'll have three scholarships this year, and it opens up the pool of candidates we can talk to and actively recruit,' Davis said. 'There were kids in the past we couldn't even get in the doorway due to finances.

'It's a very good thing. But it doesn't change how you do your job. You've just got to be more precise in your evaluations of your recruits and not make too many mistakes.'

Colgate will offer a total of 31 athletic scholarships for 13 sports: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's soccer, and women's field hockey, softball and volleyball.

Football is not affected by this plan because Colgate's conference, the Patriot League, does not permit scholarships in that sport. The football team will still have 15 need-based scholarships.
