And now introducing.. the Patriot League Strength of Schedule early indicator stat: Bucknell's average OOC opponent RPI comes to...166. This compares with:
Navy: 170
Lafayette: 176
I'll keep updating those as new schedules come in, so that we have something halfway objective to look at when comparing schedules and who's doing what for the league. I'm on vacation for the next few days, so there won't be updates. Try not to cry.
Navy has released it's schedule. Here's the link to

Low Major Madness
Rochester, NY will be hosting
Army and Bucknell in a doubleheader against Cornell and Niagara, respectively.
Niagara is
headlining a 2 game set that features three teams that had losing records last year. But this is the Blue Cross Arena, not MSG, so this is actually a nice thing for everyone involved. I'd like to see PL teams play more MAAC teams, it's a fairly underrated league with a lot of solid teams (Manhattan, Siena).
Rochester is way up there in upstate NY, yes? Fun trip for BU.....

Ooh ooh, Can I Be Used in a War of Attrition Too?
A lot of Class of 2004 kids are on Navy's radar
Stats and Stuff
Here's the
NCAA Ranking Summary (you have to navigate to get to it) for the PL last year. The news basically shows what everyone else knows: Holy Cross won a lot.
They ranked:
-Third nationwide in scoring defense (BU was 4th, so this may say more about the ability of teams to score than anyone's defense)
-Ninth in aver margin of victory (11.6 pts)
-Third in rebound margin-- 7.9 more rebounds a game than their opponents. The next closest was Lehigh, which had 1.7 more boards a game. This is the most impressive stat-- they were really tall and really good at using it.
-They were also sixth in W/L percentage at 83%. Pretty impressive.
Other notable stats:
-American took nearly 9 three point attempts a game-- making them 11th in the nation.
-Matt Logie took out the frustration of sharing a first name with me by hitting a ridiculous 94.8% of his free throws, putting him second in the nation.
-Jave Meade had 6.2 assists a game, making him 15th in the nation.
-Army's 54 pts/game qualified them as the fourth worst scoring offense in the nation. Ugh. They also averaged SEVENTEEN turnovers a game, making them the 294th best ballhandlers in the nation. Step off the ledge, Mr. Crews.
Conclusions we can make:
-Holy Cross had tall, strong, players.
-Lafayette (17th in the nation with only 16 fouls a game) has girly, womanly players. (joke)
-Jave Meade should have started at the point his Sophomore year.
-Matt Logie is good at shooting when no one guards him.
-Army's basketball team is an abherration unto God and Jim Crews is ruining the otherwise solid reputation of Bobby Knight. I think Jim Crews has another year before he's canned.
-Holy Cross kicked everyone's butts last year (except for AU, once).
Basketball stats are generally not so great predictors. But next installment, we'll try to use them to predict what will go on next year.

NAVY (1)
Scott Long Sr. Economics 3.63 Newbury Park, Calif./Chaminade College Prep
A few things of note here: First, Bucknell is clearly either a really easy school, or they have really smart kids. I'm voting that the kids are smart. So congrats to them, having their two best players do so well says a lot about the way the program is run. Then again, I'd probably have worked harder in college if I had Flannery looking over my shoulder. Yikes.
Next, Navy and HC...what happened? Scott Long at least gives Navy a starter rep, but Kevin "sometimes I play in practice" Hyland is the only HC representative? No offense, HC folks, (and I know someone's going to get pissed anyway) but only having one player on the honor roll makes your arguments about how important academic integrity in the league is seem less viable. No reasonable person will see the lack of HC players on here and suddenly think they're "thugs" or "misfits" or whatever, just because their GPAs are lower, but similar arguments have been levied at AU. (Please, don't go crazy about this. I'm tired of talking about JC players.)
AU didn't have _anyone_ on last year's honor roll though, so worse has been seen. My guess is that HC's drought will just be a one year thing, considering they have recruits coming in that are well hyped academically.
AU and Army do a good job of having players BARELY make the list. 3.2 is the minimum to get on it. I'm baffled at how Raimondas Petrauskas made the list. The guy
doesn't speak English! What does it say about my GPA while I was at AU if someone who DOESNT KNOW WHAT PROFESSORS ARE SAYING can get on the honor roll?? Either he's really really really smart and only took math classes, or there was a lot of tutoring going on. Also of note is that I think Craig Weinstein has more points on his GPA than he did in the entire 2003 season on the court. As AUScott has noted, there are about 100 kids on campus that should walk on before this guy (Jeff Jones' 10 year old son, for example)-- he must have the best attitude ever to be on that squad.
Lastly, does anyone else think it's kind of weird that the league is releasing the GPAs of these kids? It just seems kind of slimy, I can't put my finger on why. Let me know what you think.
More news as it develops, let me know what you think about the upcoming league play or if you have any news...

Here's how realistic changes to the PL are
NY Times, July 11: "By yesterday it seemed as if every conference short of the Patriot League was talking realignment. "
Kind of Unrelated
Well, it seems that AU is poised to become the
best basketball school in DC. Georgetown is all but a joke at this point. There's a reason they don't play AU, GW, or Howard-- they'd lose. Hell, Catholic U (D3) could probably take them.
They're losing people by the day. One starter is coming back. Only six of their 14 players from last year are returning. This team is leaking like my mom at a Streisand movie.
Let's hope GU schedules a PL team this year-- Anyone but Army has a good change against them.
American University Gets Imaginary Trip to NCAAs
Joe Lundardi's Pre-Pre-Season Bracket has the Eagles topping HC next year. Why, you ask?
"The Eagles have been chipping away at Holy Cross the past two years. So maybe there is a new Patriot League champion upon us."
Hopefully he's right. It will be interesting to see the pre-season polls, since I'm not sure there's a favorite out there. It would be a good year for a team like LU or BU to step up. If you have any thoughts as to who's going to win next year (read: why your team is going to win next year), post 'em on the message board, we'll have our own pre-pre-season poll.

Mostly, their schedule sucks. Look in the archives for why. I really don't know why you would play (read: get beaten up by) Pennsylvania in the middle of conference play. What next, will Fran O'Hanlon offer to wash the UPenn AD's car or shine his shoes?
First one to tell me what Lycoming's mascot is gets fame and fortune via this website. (50 hits a day, look out Drudge Report!)
ps. check the pdf link above, which is only notable because of the really really funny picture of O'Hanlon.

Basketball star Knight gets
scholarship to Colgate
BERKELEY
Simon Knight, a 6-foot-8 center for the St. Mary's High basketball team, signed a letter-of-intent with Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y.
Knight averaged 18.2 points and 13 rebounds per game while leading the Panthers to their third straight Bay Shore Athletic League championship.
'Simon Knight will bring a big body and toughness to the program,' Colgate head coach Emmett Davis said.
'His willingness to rebound and defend will fit in well with our overall philosophy. His double-double average for scoring and rebounding will be welcomed.'
Knight was pivotal in the Panthers' upset win over top seed Salesian in the semifinals of the BSAL playoffs, scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, not to mention hitting the game-winning free throw with less than 10 seconds left.
Knight was awarded second team all-BSAL honors in his senior season and was named MVP of the Modesto Christian Tournament.
He will join a Raiders team that last season finished second in the Patriot League.
One former Raiders center who made it big is the Warriors' Adonal Foyle, who played at Colgate from 1994-97.

I hope they didn't tell his parents he's on scholarship.. In addition to the screwed up headline, nice legwork by the reporter to quote Coach Davis WORD FOR WORD from the press release.

Lakeland star set for important summer
Division I programs already interested in 6-foot-6 Schneider
By Ethan Slavin
For The Patent Trader
For most high school students, the summer after junior year means spending some time with friends, relaxing in the sun and having fun before the rigors and stress of senior year starts.
For a high school basketball player looking to play at the collegiate level, the summer before senior year is a little different. Those few months can have a tremendous impact on where a high school player ends up playing in college.
Despite knowing how important this summer is, 6-foot-6 Lakeland senior-to-be Ryan Schneider said that he is staying calm about the next few months.
"To me, there is no pressure this summer, no real reason to panic," said Schneider, a guard/forward. "Basketball has been such an important part of my life for so long, and I've always dreamed of playing at the college level. I know that this summer I'm just going to prove that I belong at that level."
Academics are important
Schneider has already proven that to many NCAA Division I coaches. He's being recruited by Bucknell, Holy Cross, Colgate, Lehigh, Albany, Vermont, Marist and Siena and has also drawn interest from Providence.
While he has yet to find a definitive favorite, Schneider, who maintains a 93 average in school, has found the combination of academics and athletics at the Patriot League schools very appealing.
"I realize that education is really important and should be a big factor in my decision," he said. "I think at those schools (Bucknell, Holy Cross, Colgate and Lehigh), you can get a great education and still play basketball at a high level."
In an interesting twist, Schneider actually learned about these institutions by reading a book about the Patriot League written by John Feinstein entitled, "The Last Amateurs."
"Reading that book really spurred my interest in the schools," Schneider said. "They are the last group of student-athletes in Division I that are students before they are athletes, and only in the last couple of years have the schools even given athletic scholarships."
Playing AAU with Hawks
Despite his strong standing with these schools, Schneider still will have an incredibly hectic summer. He is a starter on the Westchester Hawks 17-and-under select team, which is currently ranked nationally, and which will be traveling to tournaments all over the country this summer, including trips to Las Vegas and Orlando, Fla., in July.
"I think that by playing in these tournaments, you get exposed to schools that might not know about you otherwise," Schneider said.
Schneider's AAU coach, Phil Diasparra, thinks that Schneider has the necessary skills to play at the highest level of college basketball.
"I really think he's a D-I player," Diasparra said. "He is 6-6, is very long, has a lot of talent and he understands the game."
In addition to his AAU commitments, Schneider will also be attending Eastern Invitational Camp July 7-10.
In the little spare time that he has, he said there will be one place that he can almost always be found - the gym.
"Whenever I have the chance, I'm going to be working out, trying to improve," Schneider said. "I'm going to try to be in the gym as much as possible."
Eyeing areas to improve
Schneider said that there are specific parts of his game that need to improve if he is going to succeed at the next level.
"I need to work on my quickness, my strength, my jumping ability and defense," Schneider said. "I think in my other areas, like shooting and ball-handling, I still need to improve, but those first four things are really what I need to get better at."
Even with all these personal commitments, Schneider said that he would also be focused on his senior year at Lakeland, which is why he will be playing on Lakeland's summer league team as well.
Schneider's fall plans are less certain.
He was quarterback on Lakeland's football team that ended the regular season with its first winning record in three years last fall, but said he is "90 percent sure" he will not play this year so that he can concentrate on basketball.
"This is my last season, and I really want to leave it all out there," Schneider said. "I don't want to have any regrets, so over the next three or four months, I'm really going to work as hard as possible."
This type of dedication is music to the ears of Lakeland coach Henry Weltman, who praised Schneider for having one of the best work ethics he has seen in his coaching career.
"He's one of those kids that you have to kick out of the gym," Weltman said. "He really wants to be a Division I player, and he's working toward that goal."
Aaron Houston/The Patent Trader
As a member of the nationally ranked Westchester Hawks 17-and-under select team, Ryan Schneider will be traveling all over the country this summer to showcase his skills, including trips to Las Vegas and Orlando, Fla., in July.
Cross Schedule
Looking at it, Holy Cross has a decent
Hoops schedule thus far:
11/22 Boston University (Home) 4pm
11/25 Harvard (Home) 7pm
12/3 Boston College (Away) TBD
12/7 Louisville (Away) TBD
12/21 Brown (Home) TBD
12/27 TBA (Holiday Festival) MSG, NY
12/28 or 12/29 TBA (Holiday Festival)
1/6 Dartmouth (Away) TBD
2/27 Lehigh (or Bucknell) Home TBD
2/29 Bucknell (or Lehigh) Home TBD
Dartmouth, Brown and Harvard are throwaways, but will at least draw crowds. Good for them that they are playing the 3 other schools you think of in the Boston area. How many schools are there around there anyway? Something like 26 I think.
Any news, let me know. There's not a lot going on from now until October. I have a couple of ideas though, that you'll see in coming days. Keep checking back.

Here's the
Girls Schedule for Navy. If you are a Navy fan, you can figure out what all their PL dates are by comparing them to the women's team. I'm going to try to put together a makeshift schedule for the teams next week, with some analysis as to who's got to do what when.
Another Savane Article from Annapolis: "SAVANE INVITE: Former Navy basketball player Sitapha Savane has been invited to mini camp with the Dallas Mavericks. Savane, a 2000 graduate of the Naval Academy, helped lead the Mids to an 82-33 record in his four years at Navy, including a 40-8 mark in the Patriot League.
Navy won Patriot League titles in '97 and '98 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, losing to number one ranked North Carolina in '97 and to Utah in '98. He ended his Navy career with 943 points, good for 18th all-time at Navy, and 190 blocked shots, which is second in school history behind David Robinson. As a senior, Savane averaged 16.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in leading Navy to a 23-6 record.
Since graduating from the Naval Academy, the native of Senegal has played for Tenerife in the Spanish league. This past season Savane averaged 18.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in leading his squad to the championship.
If Savane has a good mini camp he will be invited to play with the Mavericks on their summer league team in Los Angeles."

There's a short mention of HC leaving the PL. And insinuation that BU might be their replacement (!)

Dilbert Gone
Looks like AU will be getting our third AD in the last three years. TG was always kind of weird, but a good guy. He did seem frustrated at times with the low turnout at non-hoops games. I think he wanted a more unilateral position where he could tell people to show up and they would.
